1. Two subway trains in Toronto are 70 km apart and leave at the same time and travel towards each other. If the speed of train#1 is 75 km/hr and the speed of train#2 is 65 km/hr, how long will it take for the two trains to meet?
a. 25 min.
b. 30 min. -- answer
c. 35 min.
d. 40 min.
Solution
formula:
Distance
= speed x time
Let
t = time of travel
(note that the time of travel of the two trains will be the same).
d = distance traveled by train #1
70 - d
= distance traveled by train #2
equation1: train#1
d = 75 * t
d = 75t
equation2: train#2
70 - d = 65 * t
70 - d = 65t
by substituting the value of d in equation1 into equation2, we can now solve for t,
70 - d = 65t
70 - 75t = 65t
70 = 65t + 75t
70 = 140t
t = 70/140
t = 0.5 hr (30 min.)
2. The base of a right triangle is 12 ft. If the area of the triangle is 30 square feet, what is the height of the triangle.
a. 5 ft --- answer
b. 6 ft
c. 12 ft
d. 13 ft
Solution
formula:
Area of right triangle
= 1/2 * base * height
A = 1/2 b * h
Given
Area = 30 sqft
base = 12 ft
A = 1/2 b * h
30 = 1/2 * 12 * h
30 = 6 * h
30 = 6h
h = 30/6
h = 5 ft
