1. An average bedroom size is about 132 square feet. One carpenter can install ceramic floor tiles in an average bedroom in 10 hours. Another carpenter can finish the same tile work in 15 hours. If the two carpenters work together to tile a bedroom of the same size, how long will it take them to finish?
a. 5 hours
b. 6 hours --- answer
c. 7 hours
d. 8 hours
Solution:
Let T = time for the two carpenters working together to finish the tile work
t1 = time to tile for carpenter1
t2 = time to tile for carpenter2
Given:
t1 = 10 hours
t2 = 15 hours
Formula:
1/T = 1/t1 + 1/t2
1/T = 1/10 + 1/15
3 * 1 + 2 * 1
1/T = ---------------------
30
1/T = 3 + 2
----------
30
1/T = 5/30
5T = 30
T = 30/5
T = 6 hours
2. The ratio of two numbers is 3:5. Find the numbers if their sum is 120.
a. 35 & 85
b. 40 & 80
c. 50 & 70
d. 45 & 75 -- answer
Solution:
step1
find the sum of the terms of the ratio
sum of ratio terms
= 3 + 5 = 8
step2
find the two fractions by using the terms of the ratio as numerators and the sum of the terms as denominator
3/8 & 5/8
step3
multiply the two fractions with the sum of the numbers
first number
= 3/8 * 120
= 360/8
= 45
second number
= 5/8 * 120
= 600/8
= 75
Checking answers:
ratio
= 45/75
= (3 * 15)/(5 * 15)
= 3/5
sum
= 45 + 75
= 120
