1. An event in Gagetown, New Brunswick has a total of 90 participants consisting soldiers, sailors and aviators. How many soldiers are there if the number of sailors is 2/3 the number of soldiers and the number of aviators is 5/6 the number of soldiers?
a. 36 --- answer
b. 24
c. 30
d. 15
Solution
Let x =
number of soldiers
x + (2/3)x + (5/6)x
= 90
(3/3)x + (2/3)x + (5/6)x = 90
(5/3)x + (5/6)x = 90
(5/3 + 5/6) x = 90
(2 * 5 + 1 * 5) x = 90
---------------------
6
(10 + 5) x = 90
---------------
6
15 x = 90
----
6
15x = 90 * 6
15x = 540
x = 540/15
x = 36
(soldiers)
Checking:
substitute x = 36
in original equation
x + (2/3)x + (5/6)x
= 90
36 + (2/3)36 + (5/6)36 = 90
36 + 24 + 30 = 90
60 + 30 = 90
90 = 90
2. What is the result of the expression below?
1/6 ÷ 2/3 + 1/8 × 0.5 - 0.225
a. 0.0625
b. 0.0587
c. 0.0875 --- answer
d. 0.0785
Solution
Use BEDMAS
1/6 ÷ 2/3 + 1/8 × 0.5 - 0.225
1/6 × 3/2 + 0.125 × 0.5 - 0.225
3/12 + 0.0625 - 0.225
0.25 + 0.0625 - 0.225
0.3125 - 0.225
0.0875
