1. Find the missing number in the series.
1, 1/2, 1/6, __, 1/120
a. 1/12
b. 1/24 --- answer
c. 1/18
d. 1/48
Solution:
Multiply the denominator by one more
1 x 1 = 1
1 x 2 = 2
2 x 3 = 6
6 x 4 = 24
24 x 5 = 120
2. In a certain Calculus test, eight students failed. If the total of the students is 50, what is the success rate?
a. 80%
b. 82%
c. 84% --- answer
d. 86%
Solution:
step 1:
calculate how many students passed
passed = 50 - 8
passed = 42
step 2:
calculate % passed
% passed
= (42/50) * 100
= 0.84 * 100
= 84%
3. What is the answer to the following equation?
200 * 60 - 0.5 * 12,000 + 120/12
a. 12,010
b. 1,006
c. 6,100
d. 6,010 --- answer
Solution:
Using BEDMAS
we have 3 groups as shown by the parentheses
(200 * 60) - (0.5 * 12,000) + (120/12)
12,000 - 6,000 + 10
6,000 + 10
6,010
4. Harry is one year older than his wife Jane, who is five times older than their daughter Lauren. If the sum of the ages of Harry, Jane and Lauren is 111, how old is Lauren?
a. 10 --- answer
b. 11
c. 12
d. 9
Solution:
x = age of Lauren
5x = age of Jane
5x + 1 = age of Harry
111 = sum of ages
x + 5x + (5x + 1) = 111
6x + 5x + 1 = 111
11x = 111 - 1
11x = 110
x = 110/11
x = 10
5. Rolly has fully charged his battery-powered chainsaw to a full charge level of 40. In the morning, he used it to cut trees and the battery level was down to 5/8. In the afternoon, he used it again until the battery level was 1/5 of the level in the morning. What is the final battery charge level?
a. 25
b. 10
c. 5 --- answer
d. 15
Solution:
40 = full charge level
morning
= 40 x 5/8
= 200/8
= 25
afternoon
= 25 x 1/5
= 25/5
= 5
