1. Peter lives 2 km to the south of Andrew's house. James lives 4 km to the north of Andrew's house. Thomas' house is 6 km south of Peter's house. How far is James's house from the house of  Thomas?

a. 6 km

b. 8 km

c. 10 km

d. 12 km  --- answer

Solution:

step1: draw

James

4 km

Andrew

2 km

Peter

6 km

Thomas

step2: add

because the house of Thomas is located directly south of the house of James, we can therefore add all the numbers in between

distance from James to Thomas

= 4 + 2 + 6

= 12 km

2. Morphy is 4 times as old as Bobby.

Bobby is twice as old as Dan. Dan is 3 times as old as Garry who is now 4 years old. How old is Morphy now?

a. 94

b. 96   ---  answer

c. 98

d. 92

Solution

step1:

analyze the age relationships

Morphy = 4 x Bobby

Bobby = 2 x Dan

Dan = 3 x Garry

Garry = 4  now

step2:

start from the given age now

(Garry's age = 4)

Garry = 4  now

Dan = 3 x Garry

Dan = 3 x 4

Dan = 12

Bobby = 2 x Dan

Bobby = 2 x 12

Bobby = 24

Morphy = 4 x Bobby

Morphy = 4 x 24

Morphy = 96

3. Smith is now 24 years old. Smith is twice as old as Hudson when Smith was as old as Hudson is now. How old is  Hudson now?

a. 18   --- answer

b. 16

c. 14

d. 12

Given

24 years old

= Smith's age now

Solution

Let x = Hudson's age now

age difference now

= 24 - x

age difference when Smith was half his own age

= x - (24/2)

since age difference is always the same now and in the past,

 NOW         PAST

(24 - x) = x - (24/2)

24 - x = x - 12

24 + 12 = x + x

2x = 36

x = 36/2

x = 18

(Hudson's age now)

Checking answer:

difference in age is always equal

age difference now

= 24 - 18

= 6

when Smith was 18, which is Hudson's age now, this was 6 years ago

Smith's age 6 years ago is

= 24 - 6

= 18

since the age difference is always equal, we must also subtract 6 from Hudson's age now

Hudson's age 6 years ago

= 18 - 6

= 12

so, when

Smith was 18, Hudson  was 12,

Smith is now 24, which was twice of Hudson's age of 12 (that's 6 years ago)
